Make the Most of the Place Everyone Loves

Share

By late summer, lake homes and cottages have usually seen a lot of life.

Family has visited. Friends have gathered. Kids have run in and out. Meals have been shared. Coffee has been enjoyed by the water. And somewhere along the way, homeowners often start noticing what could work better.

Maybe the kitchen feels too small when everyone is there. Maybe the porch is only useful part of the year. Maybe the basement has potential but feels unfinished. Maybe the home has charm, but not enough space or comfort for the way people use it today.

That is where a thoughtful lake cottage remodel can make a big difference.

The goal is not to erase the character of the home. The goal is to improve comfort, function, and year-round enjoyment while preserving what made the place special in the first place.

Lake Homes Need a Different Kind of Planning

A lake home is different from a typical house.

The views matter. Outdoor access matters. Guest space matters. Storage matters.

Durability matters. And because these homes often host family and friends, the layout needs to support more people than the home may have originally been designed for.

Many older cottages were built for simpler seasonal use. They may not have the kitchen space, bathrooms, insulation, storage, or gathering areas that today’s families want.

A remodel can help close that gap.

But it should be done carefully. The best lake cottage remodels respect the original charm while improving the way the home lives.

Focus on the Spaces That Bring People Together

Lake homes are usually gathering places.

That means kitchens, living rooms, sunrooms, decks, screened porches, and lower-level rec rooms often matter more than formal spaces. People want places to cook, eat, relax, play games, watch the water, and spend time together.

When planning a remodel, it helps to ask where people naturally gather now—and where they would gather if the space worked better.

Sometimes the answer is a larger kitchen island. Sometimes it is a finished basement. Sometimes it is a four-season room or screen porch. Sometimes it is simply better flow between the indoors and outdoors.

A successful remodel should make the home easier to enjoy with the people who matter most.

Add Living Space Without Losing Cottage Character

One of the biggest challenges with lake cottage remodeling is adding space without making the home feel like something completely different.

Homeowners often want more room, but they still love the cozy, relaxed feel of the cottage.

That balance matters.

A good addition or renovation should feel connected to the original home. Rooflines, materials, windows, finishes, and layout all need to be planned carefully so the finished project feels natural.

The goal is not just more square footage. It is better square footage.

Think About Year-Round Comfort

Many lake homes start as seasonal retreats, but families often want to use them more throughout the year.

That means comfort becomes a bigger priority.

Finishing a basement, converting a porch, improving insulation, updating flooring, adding better heating, upgrading windows, or creating a more comfortable gathering space can all help extend the use of the home beyond summer.

In Wisconsin, this matters. A cottage that works beautifully in July should also feel comfortable during cool fall weekends and quiet winter visits.

What This Looked Like in a Real Hockberger Homes Project

The Lakeside Retreat is a strong example of how a lake cottage can be expanded and updated without losing its charm.

This project involved both an addition and extensive updates to the original lake cottage.

One of the biggest improvements was transforming the screened porch at the basement level into a fully finished rec room with a small bar. The basement also received new flooring, making the lower level more comfortable and useful.

Above that space, the deck was converted into a sunroom, creating a bright area to enjoy the outdoors year-round. A screen porch was also added off the side of the sunroom, giving the homeowners a comfortable place to relax without worrying about insects.

Inside, the kitchen and living area were updated with a more modern feel while still keeping the cozy character of the cottage. The wood wainscoting was removed, new flooring was installed, and the kitchen was refreshed with new cabinetry and a spacious center island.

That is what makes this project such a helpful example. It improved the home’s function, added usable living space, and strengthened the connection to the lake—all while keeping the cottage feel intact.

Late Summer Reveals What the Home Needs

By the end of August, lake homeowners usually have a clear sense of what worked and what did not.

If guests felt cramped, the kitchen may need better flow. If the porch sat unused during bugs or rain, a screen porch or sunroom may be worth considering. If the basement felt unfinished or underused, it might be time to turn it into real living space.

Those observations are valuable.

Instead of waiting until next summer to feel the same frustrations again, late summer is a smart time to start planning improvements.

Build a Lake Home That Works for Every Season

A lake cottage should be more than a place you use when everything lines up perfectly.

It should be comfortable, functional, and ready for the way your family actually gathers.

With the right plan, your lake home can become easier to enjoy in summer, fall, and beyond.
