Enjoy the Outdoors Without Fighting the Bugs

Share

September is one of the best months to enjoy the outdoors in Wisconsin.

The heat starts to ease. Evenings feel comfortable. The trees begin to change. Football season begins. And for many homeowners, the backyard becomes one of the best places to gather.

But there is one problem: outdoor spaces are not always as comfortable as they look.

Bugs, wind, rain, direct sun, and cooler evenings can all limit how often a deck or patio gets used. A screened porch helps solve that by creating a protected space that still feels connected to the outdoors.

For Green Bay homeowners, a screened porch can be one of the most practical ways to extend the use of a backyard.

A Screened Porch Is More Than a Deck Upgrade

A deck is great when the weather is perfect.

A screened porch gives you more flexibility.

It creates a defined outdoor room where people can relax, eat, watch the game, enjoy coffee, or sit outside in the evening without being fully exposed. It adds comfort without losing the feeling of being outdoors.

This matters in Wisconsin because outdoor seasons can feel short. When the weather is nice, people want to take advantage of it. A screened porch makes that easier.

Start with How You Want to Use the Space

Before designing a screened porch, it helps to think about what the space should do.

Some homeowners want a quiet place to relax. Others want a comfortable spot for family dinners. Some want a game-day gathering space. Others want a bug-free area near a pool, deck, or hot tub.

The intended use shapes the design.

A porch for entertaining may need room for seating, a table, lighting, speakers, and a television. A quiet porch may focus more on views, privacy, and comfort. A porch connected to a larger outdoor living area may need to support movement between the house, deck, yard, and patio.

The best screened porches are designed around real life, not just square footage.

Think About the Connection to the House

A screened porch should feel like a natural part of the home.

That means the entry point, roofline, materials, and traffic flow all matter. If the porch is hard to reach or feels disconnected from the main living areas, it may not be used as often as expected.

When it connects well to the kitchen, dining area, living room, or backyard, it becomes part of everyday life.

That connection also affects the look of the finished project. The porch should feel like it belongs to the home—not like something added without much thought.

Comfort Features Can Make a Big Difference

A screened porch can be simple, but a few smart features can make it much more usable.

Ceiling fans help with airflow. Lighting makes the space more comfortable in the evening. Durable flooring helps the porch handle weather and foot traffic. A fireplace or heater can extend use into cooler months. Motorized screens can create flexibility when the weather changes.

The right choices depend on how the homeowner wants to use the space.

The goal is not to add every possible feature. The goal is to choose the details that make the porch more comfortable and useful.

What This Looked Like in a Real Hockberger Homes Project

The Backyard Entertainer’s Haven shows how a simple outdoor area can become a much more functional living space.

This project began with the demolition of the original small elevated deck. In its place, Hockberger Homes created an expansive 20-foot by 20-foot covered porch with storage underneath, along with a 22-foot by 37-foot open deck designed to host a hot tub.

The covered porch included a fully screened-in patio area with motorized screens, giving the homeowners protection from pests while still allowing them to enjoy the outdoors.

The space was built with sturdy LVL lumber and included a custom stone fireplace with a gas insert and electrical setup for a television.

That combination is what makes the project stand out. It was not just a larger deck. It became a true outdoor living area designed for comfort, entertainment, and everyday use.

September Is a Great Time to Think Ahead

By September, homeowners usually know how much they used their outdoor space during the summer.

If the deck was too hot, too exposed, too buggy, or not comfortable enough for hosting, those frustrations are still fresh. That makes early fall a smart time to start planning improvements for next year.

A screened porch project takes planning. The layout, structure, roofline, materials, electrical needs, and finishes all need to be thought through before construction begins.

Starting the conversation in September gives you more time to create a space that is ready to enjoy when warm weather returns.

Create a Space That Extends the Season

A screened porch helps make the most of home.

It gives you a comfortable place to enjoy fresh air, host family and friends, and spend more time outside without dealing with every inconvenience of being outdoors.

For Wisconsin homeowners, that kind of space can quickly become a favorite part of the home.
